NSS

Not me But You

The NSS club in Nilgiri College of Arts and Science is the unit of National Service Scheme (NSS) which is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It provides opportunity to the student youth of high secondary school, Technical Institution, Graduate and Post Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various government led community service activities & programmes. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service. Since the inception of the NSS in the year 1969, the number of students strength increased from 40,000 to over 3.8 million up to the end of March 2018 and the students in various universities, colleges and Institutions of higher learning have volunteered to take part in various community service programmes.

NSS also plays a vital role in academic expansion. The spirit of self-less service is inculcated among the students and NSS Programme Officers through sustained community interactions. It is said that “Service to Man is Service to GOD” and NSS at Nilgiri College of Arts and Science provide opportunities for preparing the students for dedication in the service of the community and ultimately service to God. Developing the personality of the students through community service is the major functions.

Shaping Future

NSS is to encourage youth to participate enthusiastically in the process of national development and integration through co-operate living and action. The main objective of NSS is “Development of the Personality of students through Community Services”.

The main objectives of National Service Scheme (NSS) are:

  • To provide a variety of learning experience;
  • To develop a sense of participation, service and achievement among the volunteers;
  • To emphasize dignity of labour and self help and the need for combining physical work and intellectual perspectives;
  • To develop a sense of social and civic responsibility;
  • To develop capacity to meet emergencies and national disaster;
  • To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;
  • To help volunteers to understand the community in which they work and to understand themselves in relation to their community;
  • To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process;
  • To apply knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems;
  • To gain skills in mobilizing community participation;
  • To practice national integration and social harmony;
  • To encourage students and non-students to work together along with the adults in rural areas.
